Life with a newborn and some thoughts on Perfect Days the movie

Writer: byzezkabyzezka

Not everyday is the same. Even when we think we keep waking up to the same day… Last month I had a chance to watch the movie Perfect Days. A simple yet engaging movie that brings us into the life of a toilet cleaner in Tokyo. In 123 minutes, there wasn’t a second that I didn’t love the movie.

I left the movie theater celebrating the “simple” life we have, seeing the nuances in our never ending “routines”.

The movie gave me similar feelings or thoughts I have at the end of a newborn session. Life at a newborn’s home looks repetitive and all the tasks seem neverending. But as a mom of two, as a witness of many families raising kids, I can assure you, life changes and your “routines” change before you even realize it.

Somedays are the last ones you change 6 diapers a day, that you keep notes which breast you gave last or how many cc’s of formula your baby got.

All the tasks appear all of a sudden, we start taking care of them as if we had done for ages. And they disappear. Some of them suddenly, some of them so slowly that we don’t even recognise.

I love connecting with new mamas in many levels. Some of them are seeking for comfort and a friendly chat about those tasks they just met. Some of them are just too tired to chat and really enjoy some quiet time as I hold the baby and take the pictures. They simply sit there with us and relax.

As I keep taking pictures, sometimes I feel like watching myself from outside. You go homes, unpack your stuff, take pictures, pack again, come home, edit. Next shooting, do everything, in the same order, just like Hiranayama does in Perfect Days.

But I knew and I feel it now that no day is the same. They just look similar if you are too close. But there are tens and hundreds of differences which leads to eventually having totally different years in the long run.

I appreciate my simple and satisfying life. And I’d love to keep doing what I’m doing here, over and over again.
